Central Oregon Coast- Weekend Trip

Central Oregon Coast- Weekend Trip by Rayna Hahn

If you are just coming into the coast for the weekend,or it's your first visit, there are many things to do around the Newport, Oregon area.

1) The Oregon Coast Aquarium is just south of the Newport Bridge. There are good outside exhibits with sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals and more. There is also a seabird aviary with murres, puffins, and oystercatchers. The Passages of the Deep is the indoor display where you get to walk through an acrylic tunnel with sea life all around you. They also have an ever changing indoor display with the current exhibit called "Oddwater", which showcases strange looking ocean critters. The aquarium is a must see for people of all ages.

2) The Yaquina Estuary Hike is located between the aquarium and the Hatfield Marine Science Center. It is a great 1 mile long trail along Yaquina Bay which goes right through the habitat area for many types of birds and wildlife including Egrets, Blue Herons and Kingfishers as well as some of the same birds in the aquarium aviary, but in their natural setting.

3) You can also walk from here at the aquarium or park in the Rogue Brewery parking lot under the bridge and walk out onto the pier where there is another great view of the bay and the channel and get to interact with all types of people fishing and crabbing.

4) From the Rogue Brewery Parking lot, walk under the bridge and out to the South Jetty for even more bird, seal and boat watching. You can see the boats coming in and out of the channel as well as the waves crashing on the North Jetty across the channel. Once in awhile, surfers even ride the long, low waves in on the North side.

5) If you cross the Newport Bridge, just on the Northwest side, there is a state park that has the original Yaquina Bay lighthouse that was built before the Yaquina Head lighthouse on the north end of town. It was only open for a few years and has great tours of the keepers house for a small donation.

6) You can walk from the lighthouse parking lot, or try to find a parking spot at the Old Town Newport. We love to walk as you get a great view of the channel and bridge from the North. At the bayfront there are many interesting shops, art galleries and restaurants including the world famous Mo's and their clam chowder. This is a great place to spend a few hours shopping, having lunch and finding souvenirs for those left back home. One thing I love about the bay is the Sea Lions who have taken residence at the docks right next to the bayfront aquarium. It's a little smelly, but worth stopping by and observing their behavior close up.

7) Continue North in Newport to Olive Street where Hwy 20 comes in from the east and turn left (west) and head down to the Nye Beach district. You will see the historic street signs and can park just about anywhere. This area has really become a hot spot of Newport in the last few years. There are lots of great shops such as organic clothing, beads, hair salon and spa and some great places for lunch. You definitely want to check out the shops at Nye Beach. I like it because the area is not aimed at the souvenir trinket market like so many other areas and there are good shops for visitors and residents alike.

8) One last stop for your weekend trip and that would be the Yaquina Head Lighthouse just north of town. Turn left at Izzy's pizza and either have an Oregon Coast Passport ready or some cash for the entrance fee. There is a great visitors center that talks about the history of the lighthouse and if you are lucky, the lighthouse itself will be open for tours. There is a long spiral staircase that reaches to the top where you get a peek at the handcrafted Fresnel lens. The guides there are very knowledgeable. When finished touring this historic lighthouse, hike down the steps to the rocky beach area if it's low tide and check out the tide pools. Just remember, these are living creatures and can easily be damaged. Be conscious where you are walking. Have a great Weekend!
